For years, the opioid crisis in the United States has continued to be discussed as a nationwide concern with catastrophic consequences. In 1999, the number of opioid overdose deaths in the U.S. was 8,491. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in 2018 this number rose to 56,199 (a more than six- fold increase).
